Actor James Cromwell and Beyond Nuclear, a group dedicated to environmental issues and human rights violations, hosted the screening. I am happy to mention that POISON WIND was shown to a packed room. We were honored to have Physicians for Social Responsibility (a group awarded the 1985 Noble Peace Prize) in attendance and Senator Russ Feingold's staff came to view the film, along with many other concerned citizens who are want to learn more about the contamination and human rights violations on our Earth. Manny Pino and I had a chance to address the audience afterwards with a Q&A. There were also 2 clips shown focusing on the subject of uranium mining and resulting devastation in Africa. One of our fellow panelists, Sidi-Amar Taoua (Touareg from Niger) spoke on this to the audience. Sidi has worked hard to focus attention on the environmental situation in Niger and preserve the rights of the Touareg nomadic people in the Sahara Desert.
One of the highlights of he trip was a whirlwind of politicking on Capitol Hill Friday afternoon.
There were appointments scheduled with 5 US Representatives and one Senator. Everyone on Capitol Hill received a copy of POISON WIND and a dvd of our clip from the upcoming WOMEN and the MINES, which addresses the health issues women endure as a result of these human rights abuses.
Our group was divided into two teams. You basically have 5 minutes each to present information on your subject and hopefully educate someone on the topic of uranium mining on
Indigenous lands. As Manny Pino said, "We'll have 5 minutes to present 50 years!"
Backtracking a bit Beyond Nuclear held a press conference, Thursday at the National Press Club in Washington, where there was an opportunity to speak out on these issues. Surreal is the only way to describe being in DC like this!
Actor James Cromwell attended all of the events and his passion as a humanitarian and environmental rights activist is nothing short of inspiring. Forever dedicated to this work and speaking out about land and human rights abuses. One quickly forgets he is an actor and views him only as a fellow human rights campaigner who cares deeply about our planet and the treatment she endures.
I met some wonderful people! Our panel included: 2 powerful women (Natalie Wasley and Mitch) from Australia who are dedicated to saving Aboriginal Homelands, Indigenous people and the lives of those who are most affected by enviornmental contamination. Also joining Beyond Nuclear was Dr. Bruno Chareyon, who is a Nuclear Physicist from France, Sidi-Amar Taoua (an activist from Niger), Robert Tohe "who is a Diné leader, advocate, and environmental justice organizer" and Manny Pino from Acoma Pueblo, NM, who received the Nuclear-Free Future Award in 2008 in Munich, Germany. It was an honor to be with this passionate and
focused group.
The POWERSHIFT ’09 Conference took place on Saturday at the DC Convention Center. Over 11,000 youth from all over the world represented and enthusiastically attending workshops and panel discussions. The energy was high and focused on the future of our planet. Obama speaks to them, whether he is present or not. What a difference a President and new administration can make! Hope Lives!
Our panel had a room, that seats 500 people and it was packed, with the convention center turning people away due to fire regulations. The other discussions and workshops experienced the same overflow.
I ran into fellow filmmaker Myron Lameman who had attended the POISON WIND screening, in San Francisco, during our showing at the 33rd Annual American Indian Film Festival in NOv of 2008. He is getting ready to shoot a feature in Canada and recently appeared in Cowboy SmithX's film CHANCE, which also screened in the same category as our film.
The 5 days are still a blur but what a fantastic one! Once I stepped on the conveyor belt at the airport, it felt as if I never got off until placing my feet back in my driveway.
A wild ride and hopefully the bottom line is that we made a difference.

POISON WIND: AIFI Update

There is lots of news, that we'd like to share with everyone. First our experience at the 33rd Annual American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco, this past weekend, was nothing short of terrific.

POISON WIND looked & sounded great in its Beta SP format and the audience's response was VERY positive. We had an estimated 150 people for our screening, which led to an energetic question & answer period afterword. The film which followed ours is entitled SHADOW OF THE SALMON and the director, Michael Pearce of 360 Productions, thanked us for our film and complimented our work before his film began. I return that now by having a chance to say his film was quite powerful in its story about the water rights issues for the Salish Tribes of the Pacific NW. It was a TRUE honor to have been included at this festival. We are all very grateful.

My next blog will be posted sometime tomorrow with photos, links and information about the music video Paul DeNigris and I shot for CLAN II DESTINE out at Papago Park on November 3rd. It was a great day for filming and the film's song 'Breeze in the Wind' is well honored by this amazing and dedicated band.
In the meantime..time is of the essence for our Mother and her Heart...The Grand Canyon.

Nuclear-Free Future Awards

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_z_ThlfsaMg4/SP-_F8YzaGI/AAAAAAAAAAo/BFpNgH8e6hM/s320/manny.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260132998622439522" />

Manual Pino will be receiving the Nuclear-Free Future Award on October 24 in Munich, Germany for his work in helping to educate people, on a global basis, about the effects of uranium mining on the Environment, Indigenous People, Former Miners and Communities. POISON WIND has been accepted into the line-up at the 33rd Annual American Indian Film Festival (American Indian Film Institute), which takes place in San Francisco, on Nov 7-15. The film screens on Saturday, November 8th at noon and further information will be available on the 220-productions website this week.
The Nuclear-Free Future Awards, taking place in Munich, Germany on October 26th will be playing the movie at the event. Also we are further honored to have the Sierra Club of Flagstaff showing the movie on November 15th. They are hoping to arrange a panel discussion, speakers on uranium mining afterward. Plus there was good news last night from Washington State and the Yakama Film Festival, who emailed last night to let us know the film had been accepted to play at their festival in March/2009.
Aside from the festival news: communities in the NW, Canada, Australia and Alaska are writing for copies to share with their own impacted areas. That is the sole purpose of POISON WIND. To educate and inform through the stories of those most affected. We are grateful for all these opportunities.
I will be updating again soon with more information on all of this and Clan/destine II
and their new CD OPERATION PEACE!

Pray for the people of the Havasupai and the Grand Canyon and remember the words of elder Rex Tolusi:
"With the environmental groups that are concerned for animals, for plantlife, for the waters, at times I find it hard to bring these people together, to look at things as we, the indigenous people do. Our environment, we are a part of, for we are the children of our Mother Earth. The groups that I speak to, I tell them, if the fishes can come together, if the four-leggeds can come together, if our feathered relatives come together, why couldn't the two-legged people come together and work together? I feel that it's time now that we look at things around us, as we, the indigenous people, look at the earth, the air, the waters, the universe. We must protect these things. . . .
I want to say the people that are here to spread the word to those who are not here, tell them what we have said here.”
Rex Tilousi, Havasupai Nation, Grand Canyon, USA. Hopefully there will be a panel discussion afterwords about uranium mining on Indigenous lands and future of mining in the Grand Canyon. The film will also be shown
by the Sierra Club in Flagstaff in early October and at the Western Mining Action Network’s conference in Albuquerque on Sept 24.
We continue to send POISON WIND to film festivals and are very thankful for the 4 we have been screened at so far. The Natural Resources Defense Council asked for a copy of the film and that went out last week. The film will be available for purchase beginning Sept 6 and I'll post information on ordering the DVD by then. The single of
BREEZE IN THE WIND by CLAN II DESTINE will be available too.

Film Festival News

Co-producer, Norman Patrick Brown, and I are proud to announce that POISON WIND has been accepted at the TALKING STICK FILM FESTIVAL, taking place at the Hotel Santa Fe: June 21-26. I realize it has been a long time since I last posted but we have been busy editing POISON WIND. Right now we are working each day to have the film "locked" by the end of next week. The Phoenix Film Festival final submission date is 12/14 and so are a few other festivals I am entering the movie into.
A quick update regarding Clan II destine! Dave Montour and the band came into the studio 2 weeks ago and recorded 'Breeze in the Wind' for the film. Its really terrific and will be a shining point in the movie. I'll post some pics from the recording session later on. This past weekend we scooted over to New Mexico and recreated scenes, that show what conditions were like for the miners.
Right now its back into the "editing cave..."

4th Annual Southwest Native American Film Festival

I received word today that the preview clip for POISON WIND will screen at the Coconino Center for the Arts in Flagstaff on October 6th between 2 and 4:30 pm! We have a 6 minute clip that is being shown as a work in progress. (At this point our final cut will be running almost an hour in length.) Co-producer Norman Patrick Brown and I will be in attendance...as will Damon Watahomigie from Havasupai. Music news: Dave Montour of Clan/Destine has been awesome and the song he has written for the film is tentivly titled: 'Breeze in the Wind.' I meet with Dave again on Monday morning and I'll post more on that next week. The POISON WIND clip had an unscheduled screening this afternoon at the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe, AZ. A room filled with almost 100 or so Faculty and Deans gave the clip an amazing response, which I am very thankful for. This is the school that has donated the Hi Def cameras and the editing equipment to us..so the documentary could be made. This coming week their PR team will be sending out a press release for the film and I will post about that when I have a copy.
This past week we went back up to the Grand Canyon to interview a member of the Walapai. Uranium mining interests have been pressuring them since this past Spring about mining on their land. This has to be stopped.
It seems right that the film began in the Grand Canyon when I met Damon there almost a year ago. Now it has come back to the Canyon with our final interview....full circle.

Film & Music News

Hi, Everyone! Last week I sent a DVD with our clip out to a few people and one of them was Michael Blake...who won the Academy Award for writing DANCES WITH WOLVES. We had the opportunity to speak with him a few months ago, at the Smoki Museum in Prescott, AZ, and I was hoping, that he might take a moment to watch our 6 minute clip and respond. Well, I have to tell you he called me yesterday and said, "If the documentary stays with the level of what you have in the clip...I think it will be tremendous." (direct quote) He said his only complaint was that the clip made him want to see more! (yeah!) I spoke with him for almost an hour Monday morning about the movie and he said that he was honored to be a part of it. (I almost fell out of my seat!) Having Mr. Blake's support hopefully may help us get into a few film festivals. In any event, I feel we are on the right track with how we are putting this together and it seems to be hitting a cord with folks. He also told me he would be there to help POISON WIND thru to the very end.
I also met with Dave A. Montour of Clan/Destine on Tuesday and he has a song he wrote awhile ago that he thinks might work for the film. It is AWESOME!! He also showed me a beautiful flute he's carving...so beautiful.
IMDB for Michael Blake filmography: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0086658/
Clan/Destine: http://www.myspace.com/clandestinerezdawgs
Keep everyone posted! We are coming back to the Gallup/Grants area on July 22nd and will be there until the 25/26. I have some interviews scheduled and we'll also be focusing on shooting some exterior footage & b-roll for the film. After that the picture will be "locked" and we'll be concentrating on getting it ready for submission to the Sundance Film Festival. A cut will have to be in their office in LA by Sept 14 and my friend, Damon Watahomigie (Supai Waters), from the village of Supai, will be traveling to LA for this. He will physically hand the submission over to them. For me this will be symbolic of how the film began and Damon's part in all of this.
I had lunch with Clan/Destine 2 weeks ago and we talked about their music possibly being involved with the film. They have some wonderful CD's out, which are available for download on iTunes. One song in particular I like VERY much and think would work for the documentary is 'Inner Soul." Dave Montour called me today to say they are still interested in talking more about the project. He & Cano are headed back into the studio soon to work on a new CD for Clan 2 Destine.
Check them out at: http://www.canyonrecords.com/cr7037.htm
This week I will be getting ready for our trip to NM and also meeting with a designer about a website for POISON WIND. My editor, Keegan Ead, will be busy going through some more of the 52 hours of film we have in the can. He has put together a teaser, which runs 6 minutes or so...with a great POISON WIND effect at the end. Mitch Abbott put that together using Adobe After Effects. This clip is NOT a movie trailer in the true sense but it is meant to let people know where we are headed with this documentary. http://www.poisonwindmovie.com/
The teaser plays off of Keegan's website for now and that process will change once we have a site built for it. So bear with it as it may take a minute to begin playing depending on what browser you're using and also if you have Quicktime installed. I will be bringing some DVD's with me next week and if anyone would like me to mail them one I can do that. Just email me with your address at: jennypond@poisonwindmovie.com

Introduction

My name is Jenny Pond and, along with Norman Patrick Brown, I am producing a documentary about uranium mining and the devastating effect that it has on the people, livestock, water and agriculture in New Mexico and Arizona. This film has been in production since late January and will be filming through July of this year. It came about through a chance meeting, which took place in November of 2006, some 5,000+ feet down in the Grand Canyon when I first met one of the principals in our film...Damon Watahomigie. He approached me with information concerning uranium mining on the Kaibab Plateau and the current onslaught of interest by mining companies seeking to drill for ore on the Havasuapi's scared sites...as well as in the canyon itself. Pre-production for the film began soon after we first spoke and since then we have interviewed members of the Navajo Nation (Diné), Shoshone of Nevada, Acoma Pueblo and Laguna Pueblo. The impact of this holocaust can be felt throughout the Indigenous lands here and reverberates in countries such as Brazil, India and in places such as the Amazon. These concerns were addressed last year at the Indigenous World Uranium Summit at Window Rock, Navajo Nation (Arizona), USA (see links) when activists from all over the world came to express their concerns over the dangers of uranium mining.
Our goal is bring this film to the public by submitting it to film festivals throughout the country and abroad. We hope to raise the level of awareness concerning the hideous tactics used by mining companies in relationship to the actual mining of this monster and the lack of compenstation. Please feel free to contact us at any time with information or interview requests. Thank you.
